What is TMJ?
The Temporo-Mandibular Joint connects the lower jaw to the temporal bone of the skull and is located immediately in front of the ear on either side of the head. Deemed the most complicated joint in the body, the TMJ can develop a number of disorders, the symptoms of which include: pain in/around the ear (or spreading to the face); tenderness of the jaw muscles; clicking/popping noise with the opening/closing of the mouth; locking or dislocation of the jaw; pain from yawning, chewing or opening the mouth loudly; neck and shoulder pain; and headaches, including migraines.
If you experience any of these symptoms, Dr. Osseiran, a certified TMJ Management Dentist, can recommend the proper treatment with the use of Bioresearch Computerized technology.
TMJ Management
There are a variety of treatments that will help to alleviate TMJ pain and prevent further damage from occurring in the jaw area. More than 95 percent of TMJ disorders are successfully treated with non-surgical techniques, including the appliances and applications described below.
Full Mouth Rehabilitation
Combining the science of Neuromuscular Dentistry with the artistry of Cosmetic Dentistry, Full Mouth Rehabilitation corrects imperfections in bite alignment while enhancing the aesthetics of your smile. In the preliminary stages of this treatment, the mouth is measured to determine which therapy best works for the current position of the jaw.
Splint Therapy
A splint is a removable, custom-fitted orthodontic appliance that reconditions your muscles, jaw joint and teeth to work together seamlessly while inhibiting grinding and clenching habits.
Transcutaneous Electric Stimulation (TENS)
The first step in relieving TMJ tension is to relax facial and jaw muscles. Transcutaneous Electric Stimulation (TENS) uses electrical pulses to stimulate the muscles, and, in turn, the body produces natural endorphins, reducing pain and stiffness in the jaw.
Ultrasound and T/electric Muscle Stimulation
To improve TMJ mobility and alleviate soreness, the Ultrasound treatment applies deep heat and then low-level electrical stimulation to the joint. After several applications (true?), the tightness in the jaw tissue relaxes, resulting in reduced muscle spasms, increased tissue extensibility and significant pain relief.
Orthodontic Treatment
Reestablishing the proper, and most comfortable, TMJ position can often be accomplished with functional orthodontic treatment. As a member of the American Academy of Functional Orthodontics, Dr. Osseiran is skilled in the design, application, maintenance and monitoring of corrective appliances to bring teeth, lips and jaws into proper alignment and achieve facial balance.
