What Are Dental Implants?

A natural tooth consists of a root and a crown. If you compare natural teeth to implant-supported replacement teeth, you’ll see they have the same basic parts. Both have a crown (the visible part used to chew food). Both have a root that holds the tooth securely under the gum and is anchored into the jaw. The difference is that the implant is made of titanium – the same time-tested material used by surgeons for artificial joints. When you lose a tooth, you lose both the root and the crown. To replace the tooth, the surgeon first replaces the root with a small dental implant.

Time is allowed for bone to heal and grow around the dental implant. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth.  A support post (abutment) is then placed on the implant and a new replacement tooth (crown) is placed on top of the abutment. In many cases a temporary replacement tooth can be attached to the implant immediately after it is placed. If all of your teeth are missing, a variety of treatment options are available to support the replacement teeth.

The Dental Implant Procedure

Once you have had your consultation and it is confirmed that you are a viable candidate for dental implants, the dental implant surgery will be scheduled and performed to place the implant in your jaw. Next, the surrounding bone will heal via a process called osseointegration, during which the bone grows around the implant to hold it firmly in place. Finally, we will complete the implant placement process by placing an artificial tooth, or crown on the post which resembles your natural teeth.

The Benefits Of Dental Implants

Dental implants eliminate collateral damage to your adjacent teeth by focusing treatment solely where the tooth or teeth were lost. This conservative approach returns you back as closely as possible to the state that existed when all your teeth were present and healthy. A dental implant approach means more of your own teeth are left untouched. This represents a significant long term oral health benefit.

ESTHETICS

Dental implants have the ability to return your smile back to the look that existed prior to teeth being lost while eliminating a conventional bridge approach. Dental implants provide the function and natural esthetics you enjoyed with your own teeth. Since implants fuse (integrate) with your own bone, they help prevent further bone loss and gum recession that often accompanies bridge work or dentures. Given Dr. Osseiran’s passion to achieve optimum esthetics, anyone who glances at your smile will likely never know you have a replacement tooth.

CONFIDENCE & RELIABILITY

Dental implant will enable you to speak, eat, and function with comfort and smile with confidence. Since implants are fused to your bone, they provide the highest level of reliability and predictability. Success rates close to over ninety-seven percent measured over a patient’s lifetime have been reported.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are natural-looking replacement teeth that are removable. There are two types of dentures: full and partial.

  • Full dentures are given to patients when all of the natural teeth have been removed. Conventional full dentures are placed after the gum tissue has healed, which can take several months. Immediate full dentures are placed immediately after the teeth have been removed and may require frequent adjustments during the first couple of months of use.
  • Partial dentures are attached to a metal frame that is connected to your natural teeth and are used to fill in where permanent teeth have been removed. Partial dentures are considered a removable alternative to bridges.
