smiling woman with invisalignYou made a wise decision when you committed to Invisalign in Tysons Corner. Before you know it, you will be the owner of a straighter, healthier, and more beautiful smile. In the meantime, however, you’re going to have to make a few simple adjustments to your daily routine so your treatment will proceed as smoothly as possible. Here are some handy tips to help you get used to life with Invisalign.

Practice Speaking

When you first place your aligner in your mouth, it might feel rather strange. It could even cause you to speak with a lisp. The way to solve this is simple: practice, practice, practice. The more you speak with Invisalign on your teeth, the faster you’ll get used to it. Your speech should go back to normal very quickly.

Expect a Bit of Tenderness

Invisalign works by applying gentle pressure to your teeth in order to reposition them. This should not be overtly painful, but you can expect your mouth to be a bit tender, especially when you first begin your treatment. One way to cope with this is by beginning your treatment at night, just before you go to bed. You’ll be able to sleep through part of the initial discomfort.

Make Oral Hygiene a Priority

Oral hygiene is always important, but it is especially so when you are undergoing orthodontic treatment. The last thing you want is for your aligner to trap bacteria or food particles against your teeth and contribute to decay and bad breath. Be sure you brush and floss your teeth after each meal.

It’s also vital that you keep your aligners clean. Rinse them after each meal before you replace them in your mouth. Every night, give your aligner a thorough cleaning. You should also soak them in Invisalign crystals or a denture-cleaning solution. Then, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to get rid of any plaque or food particles that might still be on them.

Drink Lots of Water

When you first place Invisalign in your mouth, you may start to produce a lot of extra saliva. Drinking plenty of water will rinse away some of that excess moisture and help keep you hydrated. Be sure that the water is either cold or room temperature; if it is too hot, it could damage your aligners.

Wear Your Aligners as Much as Possible

For Invisalign to be as effective as possible, you need to keep it in your mouth for 20 – 22 hours each day. This might mean that you have to plan your meals so you avoid mindless snacking and other activities that could cause you to cut back on the amount of time that your aligners are in your mouth.

Invisalign comes with a bit of a learning curve, but getting used to it shouldn’t take you long. Use the above tips to make your treatment as easy and stress-free as possible.
