There was a time when straightening crooked or gapped teeth meant using metal braces, which were uncomfortable, hard to keep clean, and harmful to gums and cheeks. Now, we have Invisalign®, a set of plastic aligners that nudge your teeth in place. Best of all, you can remove the aligners to eat, drink, and attend special events.
Here are more reasons why Invisalign aligners could be better for you than metal braces.
- More comfort and less pain than metal braces
- Fewer office visits
- Removable for eating and drinking
- Easier to brush and floss
- They’re almost invisible
The dentists at Just For Your Smile are fans of Invisalign and want you to know these three facts.
1. Invisalign uses CAD software
Your Invisalign appointment begins when your dentist takes a dental impression of your mouth. These impressions are used to create a mold of your mouth. Then, Invisalign uses a computer-aided design system to produce a set of aligners, which shift your teeth in increments of 0.25 to 0.33 millimeters.
The beauty of Invisalign aligners is that you can remove them whenever you want, especially before eating and drinking. However, if you want your aligners to work, you must wear them for about 22 hours each day.
2. Invisalign promotes a healthy mouth
Before you insert your aligners, you should brush and floss your teeth, the regimen that is the foundation of good oral health.
Traditional braces, on the other hand, make brushing and flossing a chore. A mouthful of metal brackets and wires make it hard to brush and floss, which can promote tooth decay.
3. Beverages to avoid
Invisalign trays are made from clear and flexible plastic. That makes them much more comfortable than metal braces. However, these trays are prone to stains from some beverages and foods.
Here are drinks you should avoid:
- Red wine
- Soft drinks
- Dark tea
- Acidic drinks
If you must have your morning latte, remove aligners before drinking, and brush them before replacing them in your mouth. Also, try sipping your favorite beverages through a straw, which bypasses the aligners.
Are you a good candidate for Invisalign?
Invisalign is a great treatment for teeth that need mild to moderate straightening.
However, if your teeth gaps are more than 5.0 millimeters, or your crooked teeth are the result of skeletal or joint issues in your jaw, then metal braces might be your best bet.
