Help for Your TMD

An estimated 12% of adults living in the United States experience jaw pain at any time. While numerous things can cause you to feel pain anywhere in your body, jaw pain is a particularly difficult symptom to manage.

Jaw pain can affect you unlike other pain, as your mouth is responsible for so much of your communication.

If you’re suffering from jaw pain, get in touch with the caring practitioners at Just For Your Smile in Vienna, Virginia, and Potomac, Maryland. Our dedicated team is here to assist you with any oral health issue that you may have, as well as issues that affect your face and neck.

Pain in your jaw can hinder your daily life, but we have safe and effective ways to treat you.

What is TMD?

TMJ is an abbreviation for the temporomandibular joint, a large joint that facilitates the motion of your jaw. When you have a physical disorder that affects your TMJ, you almost certainly have TMD, or temporomandibular joint disorder.

TMD is an umbrella term for a variety of conditions that cause discomfort in your jaw, face, neck, and head. TMD symptoms include:

TMD can develop for many reasons. Our bodies are fragile to accidents and injuries, and TMD can be the result of either. If, for example, you take a blow to the jaw, you may dislocate it, which immediately causes pain. If it continues for an extended time and causes pain in other parts of your head or face, it could be TMD.

Other causes of TMD include:

Women are at greater risk of developing TMD than are men, and it primarily affects young adults between 20 and 40 years old.

I need help for my TMJ

When treating TMJ, your provider here at Just for Your Smile starts with conservative treatments — mild TMD generally responds to therapeutic exercises. Your provider also suggests certain lifestyle changes that will balance your stress levels. Treating TMD comes with plenty of options:

Custom orthotic wear

Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is both a cause and a symptom of TMD. Your provider can discuss options for custom mouthpieces that protect your teeth — and your precious sleep.

Medication

Your provider may prescribe an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication to ease your TMD pain. If your pain is severe, your provider has prescription options, and discusses them with you when we diagnose you.

Jaw exercises

Jaw exercises are typically the first type of treatment offered to our patients. Drug-free and flexible with your schedule, mild TMD may be reduced or eliminated with certain exercises.

TENS Machine

A transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) machine effectively treats TMJ pain by delivering low-level electricity to pained areas of the face. TENS has been a proven effective treatment for all stages of TMD, and it’s a fast, noninvasive treatment.

My jaw is aching, and I need help

TMD can go away on its own, and it typically does. If your TMJ pain is affecting your everyday life, however, it’s time to get some help. Living a comfortable life, free of TMD, is your ticket to better sleep, more thorough chewing, and all of the talking and catching up with loved ones.
