Why Invisalign® Is Better Than Traditional Braces

Why Invisalign® Is Better Than Traditional Braces

Crooked teeth have their own character — whether they’re jutting out, misaligned, or crowded too closely together. You can give your smile a welcome change of character if you decide to straighten your teeth, and doing so will also help you in ways you may not expect.

For the best options to realign your teeth, our caring team of dental professionals at Just For Your Smile in Vienna, Virginia, and Potomac, Maryland, is here to help you with a realigning option that fits your needs and your schedule.

Our practice offers several options to help you get straight, healthy teeth, and we’re proud to offer Invisalign to our patients.

What is malocclusion?

”Malocclusion” is Latin for “bad bite,” and it encompasses a number of conditions that affect dentition, the development of your teeth. When your teeth don’t meet properly, you can have problems with chewing and speaking.

Malocclusion is partially genetic, but other factors can place a person at risk of developing misaligned teeth:

Types of malocclusion include crossbites, underbites, and overbites. Crowded teeth can affect the development of a child’s jaw, raising the risk for malocclusion.

Crowded or misaligned teeth are harder to brush and floss, even by the most consistent among us. People with out-of-place teeth are at higher risk of developing plaque below the gumline, which can lead to gingivitis.

Straightening your teeth can improve your oral health, as well as your ability to chew, speak, and smile.

Why not regular braces?

Traditional metal braces are a time-tested, effective way to correctly align teeth. The problems with these braces tend to be cosmetic, led by the unpopular “metal mouth” look they create. Traditional braces also trap food particles, making it necessary to carry things like floss or a toothpick.

Braces can also catch bits of skin in the mouth, causing tiny tears in the skin. To alleviate this, dentists who provide traditional braces have non-toxic wax available to cover the rough parts of braces.

What’s so great about Invisalign?

Compared with traditional braces, the Invisalign system rates as more comfortable and easier to clean.

While there are ways to keep traditional braces clean and free of debris, Invisalign takes cleaning a step further with a big advantage: The aligners are removable. You still have to wear them for at least 22 hours a day for them to successfully shift your teeth, but you can thoroughly clean them when you’re not wearing them.

Though traditional braces are fitted to your teeth, Invisalign offers custom treatment another way — though calculations. We scan your teeth to create your custom Invisalign trays, and you start treatment as soon as you receive them. You use a new tray from the series every 2-3 weeks, and you check in with your provider periodically.

Invisalign treatments generally have a shorter timeline than for regular braces, which can take up to three years. Invisalign aligners can work in 6-18 months. Any discomfort created by your new trays can be treated with gentle, over-the-counter medication.

Invisalign has a high rate of success and satisfaction, and it’s a popular option that suits most patients’ needs. In the unlikely event that you’re not a candidate for Invisalign, we have several other options, including traditional braces, that can help you correct your bite.
