What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a protective cap that is placed over your tooth that extends to your gum line. Your dentist may recommend one for several reasons, such as to prevent a weakened tooth from breaking; however, they are most often needed for restorative treatments.

When a tooth has become damaged, such as due to a fracture or decay, the crown will prevent the need to have it removed. It will not just protect your tooth from future damage but also restore its health and function. It is not uncommon for it to be used in combination with other restorative procedures, like root canal therapy or a dental bridge.

Now, crowns are made from all-ceramic material, allowing them to look like a real tooth. It will be made to match your exact size, shape, and color needs to blend in seamlessly with your remaining natural teeth. Due to the aesthetic benefits of ceramic, they can also be used in cosmetic dentistry to improve the appearance of a tooth that has dark discoloration or an abnormal shape.

Dr. Osseiran embraces the most advanced technology to create the high-quality restoration that you need—whether for preventive, restorative, or cosmetic reasons.

How Does the Procedure Work?

Two Dental Crowns

To rehabilitate your tooth, you will first need to schedule a consultation with Dr. Osseiran. He will use digital x-rays in combination with a visual examination to develop a customized treatment plan. You will then be scheduled for your procedure.

Your tooth will first be prepared by removing any areas of damage or decay. It will be reshaped to allow the crown to fit snuggly over it. To ensure that it will meet your exact needs, Dr. Osseiran uses CEREC impressions. The 3D technology allows him to take the measurements necessary without the need for messy or foul-tasting impression material.

The images are sent to CAD/CAM software, where the specifics for your restoration will be created. Using advanced technology, it removes any room for error to ensure that it is the right size, shape, and color.

The dental lab will make your crown to meet your exact specifications. While you wait, a temporary one will be attached. In a couple of weeks, you will return to our office to have your permanent one bonded in place.
