Is a stiff, painful jaw or chronic migraine headaches common for you? Do you wake up in the morning with a sore jaw and worn down teeth? If so, you may be experiencing TMD, a condition that affects the alignment of the joints in the lower jaw. It can create all kinds of chronic pain, but thanks to our variety of treatments, including orthopedic mouthguards and a soothing TENS machine, we’ll be able to quickly diagnose and relieve your pain so you can get back to enjoying your life in no time.

Diagnosis and Treatment

In order to confirm the exact cause of your jaw pain, Dr. Osseiran or Dr. Mazhari can perform a thorough examination of your jaw movements and symptoms. This includes listening to and feeling your jaw as it opens and closes as well as observing the overall range of your jaw. The dentist may lightly press areas around your jaw to confirm where discomfort is present. Additionally, we may need to take a series of X-rays or perform a CT scan to provide detailed images of your joints. After completing the exam, we can form a more accurate diagnosis and discuss your treatment options.

Equilibration/Occlusal Adjustments

In some cases, the cause of your TMD may be due to the current condition of your tooth enamel. When performing equilibration and occlusal adjustments, our dentists make minor modifications to your existing teeth so that they come together in a more natural manner. If your bite is uneven, it can easily result in specific areas of your teeth feeling more pressure than others. This disproportionate force stimulates the nerves inside the jaw joints, resulting in chronic pain. With the help of our digital impression system at the office, we can create the most accurate depiction of your current bite, ensuring that we effectively identify and treat the right problem areas.

Occlusal Splints

If you have a poor or misaligned bite, also known as a malocclusion, then it can easily result in other issues down the line. For example, those with uneven bites tend to suffer from chronic teeth grinding or bruxism. To prevent these issues as well as treat the symptoms of TMD, occlusal splints can be created to make your bite more even, especially while you sleep. Many of the movements that cause your symptoms are generated as you sleep, so a splint works to restore harmony to your bite when you need it most.

This device is custom-made based on a digital impression we capture at our office. This ensures that your bite stays even while in use and is as comfortable as possible. Over the next few weeks, you should start to notice considerable improvements in your symptoms and gain a better night’s sleep as a result.

Treatment with the TENS Machine

The Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation (TENS) machine is designed to send small electrical impulses to the muscles responsible for jaw movement. As these impulses travel through your jaw, blood flow increases and flushes harmful byproducts from the problem areas. After just one hour of treatment, your jaw muscles find their most ideal positioning.

Keep in mind that while this treatment can be effective for your case, many people also use another treatment in tandem with the TENS machine to make it more comprehensive. Some people can have their entire treatment managed with TENS, but others may need an occlusal splint as well to fully treat their symptoms.
